Critical art and affirmative art

To those (such as my brother, Gene) who challenge whether art can be affirmative today (wouldn’t it by necessity be affirming and mystifying the current order of things?), I respond with a rather nasty tactic: Can art be critical today? Isn’t critique too utterly co-opted into the ideological order to have any strength as a mode for art today?

Wouldn’t we need new modes of both critique and affirmation? Perhaps this can’t be done by art alone. Perhaps objective circumstances need to change…

If I find time I’ll go back to Rancière’s The Emancipated Spectator on critical art – it’s interesting stuff.
